Library Love

One of my earliest memories of Lindsborg comes from way back in the first grade. I think my love of books, reading and learning stems from those early experiences. Once a week I would go to the library (on E. Lincoln back then) and check out as many books as allowed (2-3? I don't recall; I do recall loving the larger limits as I got older). I would then walk home (N. Main, across from the park), but first ... first it was time to stop at the old gas station (Mobil? now it's the Hemslojd), grab a cold bottle of grape soda from the machine, and sit down to review each of my newly acquired treasures.

I've continued my passionate affair with libraries ever since then. As I got older a new library was built on the campus of Bethany College and I became a frequent patron. When I went to school in Salina I was a regular visitor at the Salina Public Library. That's where I first read the seminal Scientific American issue that covered computers and microelectronics (Sep 1977?).

Once I moved to California there were two libraries that kept my attention. First was the Sunnyvale Public Library, a large, modern library. Pre-internet, I did a lot of research on a variety of topics there. The other major library in my life is the Research Library at HP Labs. I began visiting that one within weeks of joining HP and have been a regular ever since.

So with all that as background, you can imagine how much I enjoyed a recent post I came across that contained photos of some of the greatest libraries in the world. A couple are reproduced below, but if you like libraries at all you'll want to read the entire article.

Colorful Weekend

Between my cousin's blue and gold macaw, the hit of the family reunion Sunday, and the fields of wild flowers photographed between Lindsborg and Salina on Saturday, I guess you could say we had a colorful weekend!

A Look at Social Networking

Well, I've finally decided to join the 21st century, at least in one respect; I've decided to stick my toes in the social networking waters. I avoided the first round, including Friendster and the like, but for some reason feel it's time. Part of it may be that I actually now know others who are using these services; two or three years ago no one I knew personally was much involved with social networking software.

So tonight I've joined both MySpace and Facebook (why yes, I did just scan apophenia's recent post on the topic) and am considering joining others such as twitter and linked-in.

Speaking of the differences between MS and FB, on MySpace my username is glowrocks, and on Facebook it's simply my real name, Mike Rodriquez. Another interesting difference is that anyone can view my MySpace page; one must be logged in to view my complete Facebook page, though a minimal public page is available.

Another reason that social networking is more compelling now is that there are so many more people using these services. With a larger number of users comes more opportunities for finding others with similar interests. While searching for users and groups from the Lindsborg area I found quite a wide variety, ranging from the "police are out to get me" folks to a group of people who used to work at the local retirement complex, Bethany Home. I checked, and there's not yet an interest group for folks who collect fluorescent minerals; that's likely to change.

If you're reading this, I encourage you to try one (or more) of these services. There's likely more there there than you would first anticipate and I look forward to "seeing" more and more of my friends, acquaintances and colleagues in my personal online social network.

Say It's Possible

Thanks to Jeneane, I've added a new voice to my list of favorite female vocalists. Terra Naomi began her career 5 years ago, playing in clubs and touring small venues around the country. In 2006 she began posting musical videos on YouTube, and attracted a strong following. As a result, she has just recently released some of her songs on Apple's iTunes music store. You can find out more about Terra Naomi by visiting her MySpace page or her official web site.

So far I've enjoyed a few of her videos including The Vicodin Song, Close to Your Head, Up Here and four versions of Say It's Possible. Terra's got an expressive voice, and on most songs provides her own accompaniment, playing piano or acoustic guitar.

My favorite song is the second (in terms of release date) version of Say It's Possible. The original version of Say It's Possible was released in June of 2006 and while I do like it, I may prefer Close to Your Head (do you hear the hints of Bowie?) compared to this version. Two new commercial versions of Say It's Possible are available on iTunes; I like one of them, which is recorded with a simple acoustic guitar accompaniment. On the other version Terra Naomi is accompanied by a band and it just doesn't work as well as the more simple arrangements.

And that leads to the second version of Say It's Possible, released on New Year's Eve, 2006. In Terra's own words:

I asked people from around the world to film themselves answering the question "what would you do/want if anything were possible?" in three words or less. THANK YOU to all of you. This project is a true reflection of what we can do together.

The December 2006 version of Say It's Possible visually blends a variety of responses Terra received after posting her question, and is also very well sung, making it my current favorite.

Here I go, breaking site validation to post a visual link to Terra Naomi's YouTube video of Say It's Possible:

The lyrics to Say It's Possible are below the fold. Enjoy!

Say It's Possible

by Terra Naomi

I see the lights are turning
and I look outside the stars are burning
through this changing time
it could have been anything we want
it's fine salvation was just a passing thought.

Don't wait act now
this amazing offer won't last long
it's only a chance to save the path we're on
I know there are more exciting things to talk about
and in time we'll sort it out

and though they say it's possible to me
I don't see how it's probable
I see the course we're on
spinning farther from what i know
I'll hold on
tell me that you won't let go
tell me that you won't let go

And truth is such a funny thing
with all these people
keep on telling me
they know what's best
and what to be frightened of
and all the rest are wrong
they know nothing about us

And though they say it's possible to me
I don't see how it's probable
I see the course we're on
spinning farther from what i know
I'll hold on
tell me that you won't let go
tell me that you won't let go

I'm not alright...

This could be something beautiful
combine our love into something wonderful
but times are tough i know
and the pull of what we can't give up takes hold

Midsummer's Festival 2007

Another Midsummer's Festival has come and gone, and from all reports this year's event was one of the best in recent memory! Hurrah for the Lindsborg Midsummer's Day Committee; if I do say so myself, we did a great job this year.

From the excellent stylings of the Swedish rock band Tiny Toads through the always excellent performances by the youth and adult Lindsborg Swedish dancers, the weekend was almost perfect. Sunny skies, happy crowds, great selections in the crafts vending area and a wide selection of children's activities contributed to a wonderful celebration that was capped off with the raising of the Maypole and more dancing! Even the food was more varied than in years past, but fans of Lindsborg's Viking on a Stick were still able to satisfy their cravings.

I took a few photos, but it may be a while before I get a chance to review and publish them. In the interests of more quickly sharing our wonderful weekend I'm going to link to fellow area artist Julie-Ann, who has posted a great Flickr set of Midsummer's 2007 photos; enjoy!

Here's one of the pictures I took:

Maui Birthdays

Sheryl and I love Maui, and have been fortunate enough to visit more than once. In fact, as things worked out, we were actually in Maui, down at the Ohe'o Gulch area, on Moneka's first birthday back in 1998 (we called to say hello from the payphone at the ranger station and celebrated her birthday in person a couple of weeks later when we visited Lindsborg).

Somewhere along the way we promised Moneka we'd take her and her mom to Maui someday. Well, you know how life has a way of happening while you're making plans, and between the kids move from Lindsborg to San Jose, and then our eventual move to Lindsborg, all of a sudden Moneka was about to turn 10 years old and remembered our promise of a trip the Magic Isle, Maui.

And so we made plans earlier this year to go to Maui, and because of the closeness of Sheryl and Moneka's birthdays, we got to sing Happy Birthday to both of them while enjoying the beauty of one of Hawaii's most enjoyable islands.

We drove to Hana on Sheryl's birthday, always an enjoyable ride, but were unable to complete the loop around the back side of the island as the road was closed due to some damage after an earthquake last fall. Along the way we stopped many times to take pictures, enjoy the magnificent views and do some shopping at the road-side flower and crafts stands.

On Moneka's birthday she had her traditional studio portrait photo taken and then we went to Mama's Fish House for lunch. We went to Maui's small, but excellent marine aquarium, The Maui Ocean Center, after lunch.

This trip Moneka snorkeled for the first time, and after a bit of a rough beginning (not helped by an equipment malfunction) enjoyed it so much it was hard to get her out of the water. We began at Kapalua Beach, an easy beginner's site. A couple of days later we headed south all the way down to Ahihi Cove; the best fish photos were taken there. And of course we snorkeled in Honolua Bay, a wonderful marine preserve.

Speaking of snorkeling, on our last full day on the island Sheryl and I went snorkeling at a great new beach, but the water was a bit higher than we'd ever experienced before (2-4 foot swells are much higher than 1 foot or less swells!), so it was actually a bit scary. We were just about to turn around and head back in when the other lone snorkeler signaled to us that there was a sea turtle in the area. We quickly spotted it, and luckily I got a few pictures, though none are of stellar quality. Looking at the date codes on the photos, I guess we were in a hurry to exit the rough seas; I took 7 photos in 40 seconds (though it seemed a lot longer at the time).

The rest of the time we lounged around, went shopping and generally had a great, wonderful, relaxing time. We saw the blowhole on the north end of the island and also visited Iao Valley. We drove around the top of the island, had shaved ice along the way and ate lunch at the Saigon Cafe in Wailuku. As always, I can't wait for an opportunity to return!

Of course, photos were taken. Last time I took over 700 photos using a Canon S45. This year I had a Canon Powershot A630 with its companion underwater case and took over 1700 pictures!

I hope to post a lot of images in the next few weeks, and have started with a few images at my photoblog, luminosity. Start with the first Maui photo, and from there click on the top right link to proceed through the rest of the Maui photos. In addition, here's a link to the 2004 Maui Travel Blog I created after our last trip; it's full of photos! Also, the post immediately preceding this one has a few pictures taken underwater while snorkeling.

Finally, here's a picture of Moneka on her 10th birthday (some of you will remember these pictures of her when she was 1 day old) followed by a photo of the sea turtle Sheryl and I saw:

Maui Snorkeling Photos

One of our favorite activities while visiting Maui is snorkeling in the coral reefs found along Maui's coast. And no surprise, I like trying to take pictures of the underwater beauty seen while snorkeling.

I started with a disposable underwater camera, and that worked, but after a couple of years I invested in a Canon point and shoot underwater camera. That worked much better, but now we're in the digital age and this trip I took my snorkeling photos using a Canon A630 camera and WP-DC8 underwater case.

Of course, with no film costs to consider, I went from shooting less than 150 pictures per trip to over 400 this time. I managed to filter that number down quite a bit and posted 60 pictures at Flickr, and am sharing 9 of my favorites below. You can see the entire set of snorkeling pictures at Flickr by clicking the preceding link.
