18 Million Cracks

As happy as I am with outcome of the Democratic primaries, it's not without some sadness that I note that we've yet to elect a woman as our national leader, lagging behind many other countries in the world.

In that spirit, I really liked Hillary's line (from her concession speech):

Although we weren't able to shatter that hardest, highest glass ceiling this time, thanks to you it's got about 18 million cracks in it.

Happy Blogiversary!

Today marks the 6th anniversary of All the Pages (are my days).

It's been fun and exciting to have been involved in something that started out as perhaps another techno-fad and which has now turned into a mainstream activity.

One type of blogging that I've enjoyed over the years is travel blogging. I've sort of gotten away from doing that as often as in the past, and am attempting to be more active this time out.

Here's to many more years of All the Pages!

A Long Week?

It's shaping up to be a long week. Instead of starting around 8am on Monday, I began almost 6 hours ago when I received a call that a server upgrade at work hadn't gone so well and all of my web services weren't working.

The good news is that after a few hours of intense troubleshooting the most essential services are back on the air, and I know what to do to restore the rest, but like I said, it looks like a long week ahead.

A Day in the Life

Update: 18 March

Results from Sheryl's colonoscopy were "clean", thus putting to rest our fears of the past few days. Thanks to everyone who's offered their support.

A phone call in the late morning with the news that initial tests look bad in terms of having colon cancer. "More tests ordered, after that I'll be home."

An afternoon spent learning everything possible about colon cancer. Diagnosis, prognosis, treatment options, how to cope, the list goes on.

An afternoon spent waiting for the phone to ring. Spent in a daze. Recalling Sheryl's grandmother having the same problem, back in the 1940s, when treatment was nothing compared to what's available today.

And then the phone call in the early evening with the news that the 2nd test didn't reveal any particular problems, and after one more procedure (see below), we can finally rest easy.

Which leads to the real point of this post:

IF YOU'RE OVER 50, IT'S TIME FOR YOUR COLONOSCOPY!!!

Ask your doctor for details.

If you've found this site while searching for information on colon cancer, here are a few links that really helped me come up to speed very quickly. Hopefully you'll find them of some value.

Midsummer's 2008

Lindsborg Kansas will once again host its annual Midsummer's Festival the weekend of June 21st, 2008. Festival organizers this year are planning dramatic changes to underscore the community's Swedish heritage and, at the same time, offer visitors the experience of stepping into it.

In early February, Lindsborg News-Record publisher John Marshall conducted an interview with Midsummer's Festival co-chairs, Becky Anderson and Susan Achenbach. They discussed the changes planned for this year's festival; we hope this information helps make you more excited about attending this year's festival.

I'm chairing the publicity committee once again this year, and have posted this very informative interview on the Midsummer's Day web site. Read the interview to learn more about what's in store; I truly believe that the changes envisioned for this year's event will make for a very special Midsummer's celebration in 2008!

How Long?

Everyone is different, but from what I've heard, the flu that's going around locally seems to last about a week. I'm in my sixth day, so that seems about right. My fever receded a day or so ago, which is a good sign, but I still feel terrible, and given the (so far) slow rate of recovery, am not really confident I'll be that much better tomorrow. I have no energy, am irritable and depressed, and just wish this thing would be over!

And the fun continues this week, as Sheryl seems to be coming down with something now.

And ... it's all my fault. Here's a tip. You're smart enough not to mention to a family member or friend, "Say, it's quite late in the season and I haven't been sick!" Of course you know that. It's called tempting fate or something.

What you may not have realized is that the mere act of having the thought, of thinking to yourself, "whew, looks like maybe I made it through this season without a major illness" is enough to trigger the aforementioned illness. I remember exactly where I was, 10 days or so ago, when I had that very exact conversation with myself. And here we are.

This health update and public service brought to you in the spirit of nothing left to do but smile, smile, smile.

No association with Marshamellow, but I wanted to link back as a thanks for borrowing the image she created.

Yes We Can

Yes We Can

(These are the lyrics to the video that appears at the end of this posting.)

It was a creed written into the founding documents that declared the destiny of a nation.

Yes we can.

It was whispered by slaves and abolitionists as they blazed a trail toward freedom.

Yes we can.

It was sung by immigrants as they struck out from distant shores and pioneers who pushed westward against an unforgiving wilderness.

Yes we can.

It was the call of workers who organized; women who reached for the ballots; a President who chose the moon as our new frontier; and a King who took us to the mountaintop and pointed the way to the Promised Land.

Yes we can to justice and equality.

Yes we can to opportunity and prosperity.

Yes we can heal this nation.

Yes we can repair this world.

Yes we can.

We know the battle ahead will be long, but always remember that no matter what obstacles stand in our way, nothing can stand in the way of the power of millions of voices calling for change.

We have been told we cannot do this by a chorus of cynics...they will only grow louder and more dissonant ........... We've been asked to pause for a reality check. We've been warned against offering the people of this nation false hope.

But in the unlikely story that is America, there has never been anything false about hope.

Now the hopes of the little girl who goes to a crumbling school in Dillon are the same as the dreams of the boy who learns on the streets of LA; we will remember that there is something happening in America; that we are not as divided as our politics suggests; that we are one people; we are one nation; and together, we will begin the next great chapter in the American story with three words that will ring from coast to coast; from sea to shining sea --

Yes. We. Can.

Thanks to Jeneane for the transcription, and thanks to mamamusings for turning me on to the video.

I've voted in 8 presidential elections. In only 3 of them did I vote for someone or something; I hope to make it a 4th time this year!
