Cedar Waxwing
I finally got see the long-rumored Cedar Waxwings this weekend. Yesterday evening there were more than a dozen sitting in one of our trees.
This morning I took a few photos, but never could get positioned for any great images. I did like these two enough to share; don't forget you can click on the image to see a larger version.
What's in 144 Browser Tabs?
I tweeted a note about how I had 144 tabs open in my browser, possibly a new high!
I then thought of the terminally bored or insatiably curious, or perhaps the merely credulous, who might be asking, "what 144 web pages have you looked at in the past 12 days?" (And it's not all of the pages I've visited. Work isn't counted and neither are all the pages I viewed and then closed the tab.)
No, these are the pages that are still open (in tabs) because I seem to think I'm going to do something with 144 open web pages. Well, I will. I'll do a 'bookmark all tabs' storing the results in the 20100326 folder and then I'll close the window and restart Firefox.
Meanwhile, here they are for your amusement.
Mike's not quite 144 open tabs (a few that had personal info in the URL (I know, bad form, eh?) were removed). Oh, and this page doesn't validate either.

Fractalius Owls
I'm having fun using the Fractalius photoshop plug-in as these 2 images show.
Both of these images remind me quite a bit of pen and ink drawings.
You can click on either image to see a larger version.

Does Mirror Lock-up Matter?
The answer is, quite often, yes. For studio work and landscapes, yes. For action shots of people or animals, the delay can cause problems, so mirror lock-up should not be enabled.
Mirror lock-up is a setting on (D)SLR cameras that causes the mirror, which is used to bounce the image up to the viewfinder, to be flipped out of the way (as it is every time a picture is taken) and then held for a short period of time for the shake induced by that movement to settle before the photo is taken.
These 2X crops of a test chart clearly reveal the difference when mirror lock-up is not enabled.

Part of me feels bad for not testing mirror lock-up previously, but part of me realizes that it's only now having a noticeable effect as digital image sizes continue to grow. There's just a lot more pixels to view, and therefore to reveal resolution and shake, with modern 20M-pixel+ cameras.
The image above was taken with a Canon 7D and 100-400mm zoom, mounted on a tripod and shot with a remote. The camera had just been returned from Canon after being serviced for a front-focus problem, and so far I'm quite pleased with the results.
Fractalius Flower
And now for something different. This photo of a water lily was processed using the (Windows only) Photoshop plugin Fractalius. (The original version may be seen here.)
